Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, who was a World War I fighter ace and Chairman of the Board of Eastern Airlines, presented the flag of the United States. U.S. Army aircraft from Fort Rucker, Alabama, performed an aerial demonstration. This airport replaced Dale Mabry Field, which was the first airport in this city, and it was closed that year. By the 1970s, there were operating Boeing 727s, Boeing 737s, and McDonnell Douglas DC-9s, and operating airlines were Delta Air Lines, National Airlines, Southern Airways, and Eastern Airlines.

On June 26, 2015, This airport got an international title, and the City of Tallahassee and the FAA presented this name change. However, there are no international flights, they have full-service "Service port" facility and International passengers are allowed to exit the airport. This change allowed international cargo, and Tallahassee now has 9.5 million pounds of cargo a year, it is more than Pensacola does, their number is 6.8 million pounds.
